Report: Mens 1st's (1) vs (5) Kingston Upon Hull 2nd's

Top of the table Kingston upon Hull mens first team travelled to Slazengers expecting a walk over and although Slazengers lost out 5-1, the game was much closer than the final scoreline suggests.
As you would expect, Hull started strongly and with a number of ex-national league players, they controlled possession and territory but with no end product. It was only through the award of a disputed short corner that provided Hull with the breakthrough. Slazengers began to gather some possession of their own and good running from John Sykes and Dan Perry created some good opportunities only for them to go unconverted.
It was Hull who doubled their lead through a fast break which the Slazengers midfield weren't able to break down. Slazengers got the reward their play deserved before the break however with Ben Graham converting a Simon Chamberlain through ball to go in at the break 2-1 down. The second half began with Slazengers continuing their good play but were caught out when Hull cleared the ball quickly and converted to go 3-1 up.
Slazengers felt the goal should never have stood due to a foul in back play but the umpires were unsighted. The half continued evenly with both sides creating chances and it was only down to 2 late Hull goals that gave the scoreline a more onesided look. Dan Perry took the man of the match award for Slazengers with good contributions from Paul Wiper and Jack Kitchen.

The Indoor Hockey Finals are to be featured on Sky Sports this week. The final are to be held at Nottingham for Boys and Girls U16/18 and will show some adult matches also.Sat: 1pm
Sun: From 3pm to 7pm
We may even see a member of our Girls U16'splaying?

Slazengers mens first team were back in action against fellow strugglers Brigg seconds after a 6 week layoff and came away with a much needed 4-1 victory.
After such a long break, the game was always going to be scrappy and the first half found both teams struggling to keep possession. It was Slazengers however who began to get the upper hand, and took the lead off a short corner with Paul Wiper converting after the Brigg keeper had made the initial save.
The second half saw Slazengers build in confidence and they began to create more pressure culminating in the award of a penalty flick after a Brigg defender stopped the ball on the line with his feet. Simon Chamberlain stepped forward to cooly convert the flick giving Slazengers a deserved 2-0 lead. Brigg hit back however after Slazengers lost the ball in midfield and failed to clear the resulting cross. Slazegers weren't to be denied though, Phil Midgley restoring the two goal lead after taking advantage of the self pass rule to drive into the circle and fire home.
As Brigg began to press higher up the pitch, Slazengers were able to hit them on the brake and Dan Perry made it 4-1 with a neat finish through the keepers legs towards the end of the game. Slazengers will look to build on this result through the second half of the season as they hope to fend off relegation, starting with a tough fixture away at Leeds university on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the inter-club 7’s planned for today has been cancelled however beer and games as planned in the club at 5pm.
Also due to the weather the Kid’s v Parents tournament planned for tomorrow the 20th is also cancelled but...the ‘fuddle’ is still taking place at the club from 11.30am. All are welcome for snacks/drinks and challenging games!
However the Parents v Kids & Fuddle* in the clubhouse will go ahead from 12 till 2. The Clubhouse will be open from 11.30am. Please bring some food for the buffet - (other than crisps) :)

Slazengers mens first team faced high flyers Driffield and came away on the wrong side of a 7-2 scoreline. As is so often the case this season, Slazengers found themselves 2-0 after barely 10 minutes and had only themselves to blame with both goals coming as a result of defensive errors. Slazengers pulled one back though with Paul Wiper scoring an excellent individual goal, beating a number of defenders before slotting under the keeper.Driffield continued to press and scored again before Ben Grahams short corner strike deflected off a couple of defenders before finding its way in. Driffield scored their fourth just before the break to make it 4-2 at half time although Slazengers had more then competed after the initial 10 minutes.
The second half was mixed with Slazengers playing well to begin with but Driffield eventually began to control possession and with the Slazengers players tiring, Driffield were able to exploit gaps in the defence to make the scoreline emphatic in their favour.

Man of the match for Slazengers was captain Will Buckley. Slazengers will need a successful second half of the season if they are to avoid relegation but will take confidence in recent improved performances.

Slazengers mens first eleven suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Leeds which could certainly come under the title of 'difficult to take'. The first half was pretty even with Leeds playing composed hockey but offering little threat to the Slazengers goal, where as Slazengers were content to soak up the pressure and hit Leeds on the break. Dan Perry making his debut for Slazengers had an immediate impact off the bench, driving into the circle and finishing well over the Leeds keeper to give Slazengers the lead at half time.The second half began with Slazengers again playing some good hockey although Leeds were also beginning to create chances and after a strongly disputed award of a short corner, Leeds equalized. Slazengers were also reduced to 10 men after Phil Midgley was yellow carded for protesting a little too much. Leeds now had the upper hand and scored two further goals whilst Slazengers were down to 10 men. Slazengers rallied towards the final whistle and had a string of short corners but were unable to convert any, due to a combination of poor Slazengers finishing and excellent Leeds defending. As Slazengers continued to press, Leeds managed to break away and score with the last hit of the ball. Although the scoreline finished 4-1, Slazengers have only themselves to blame and certainly should have taken something from the game.

Slazengers mens first team continued their recent run of form with a well deserved draw away at Doncaster and but for a couple of defensive lapses, could easily have come away with all three points. Slazengers started well and dominated the early possession only for Doncaster to grab the first goal after keeper James Walker was unsighted off a short corner. Slazengers didn't allow their heads to drop however and soon pulled level with Jonny White driving home, again from a short corner. Slazengers were now playing with confidence and good interplay between Ben Graham and John Sykes presented Paul Wiper with a strong chance only to see his shot come back off the post. A defensive mix up however presented Doncaster with a chance just before half time which they duly converted to go into the break in front.The second half was much of the same, Slazengers playing some good hockey with Doncaster looking to hit back on the break. It was Slazengers who drew level though with Jez Whawell breaking into the 'D' after some good work down the right and he kept his composure well to finish neatly over the Doncaster keeper. By this time, Slazengers felt they could press on for the victory and should have had a penalty stroke when Phil Midgley was taken out when about to go for goal, only for the umpire to award a corner. Slazengers didn't let their heads drop and soon found the net, with Ben Graham finding the corner with a fierce strike. However it was again a defensive lapse which allowed Doncaster to equalize, their winger was left unmarked at the back post leaving him with the easiest of finishes. Slazengers take on Leeds at home next week and will be looking to build on some recent strong performances.

Slazengers mens first team got their first point of the season with a hard fought but well deserved 1-1 draw at home to second placed Chapeltown on Saturday and could well have come away with all 3 points. Chapeltown started the game in confident fashion playing some good one touch hockey but without finding any real chances thanks mainly to Slazengers excellent work rate. It was Slazengers who made the initial breakthrough, Ben Graham robbing the Chapeltown defence to square for John Sykes to find the net with a top notch first time finish. Both teams continued to play good hockey with Slazengers looking to increase their lead, only for Chapeltown to draw level just before half time.The second half was very even, Lee Secker made some strong saves in the Slazengers goal and the Chapeltown keeper also keeping his side level, firstly denying Sykes his second when he was one on one and then getting a telling touch to deny Graham at the back post although he still should have done better. This was Slazengers best performance of the season with their midfield of Buckley, White and Chamberlain starting to create a strong base. Slazengers will look to build on this performance and next week play a very strong York University side who will certainly be a test for any side in the league.

Although Slazengers mens first eleven still went down 3-2 away at Sheffield Bankers, they will come away with the knowledge that they put together easily their best performance of the season and with a bit more luck, could easily have come away with all three points. Bankers would have been confident of recording a win and although they had plenty of possession, it was all in their own half and they rarely threatened the Slazenger goal. The best chance of the first half fell to Slazengers captain Will Buckley who found himself in acres of space at the top of the circle, only to see his shot bounce back off the post. Typically of Slazengers season though, a bit of bad luck cost them just before the break, Bankers had an initial shot well saved by James Walker in goal, only for the rebound to find the goal off a complete miss hit.The second half began with Bankers winning a dubious short corner which they duly converted and when they grabbed their third shortly afterwards, they would have thought they were going to run away with it. Slazengers however weren't about to lie down and began pressing. They got on the score sheet when Phil Midgley converted excellently from a short corner and Paul Wiper came close, just failing to convert from a narrow angle after rounding the keeper. Slazengers continued to be the stronger side although Bankers did
come close on a breakaway, Walker making a quality save high and to his left. With time running out, Slazengers claimed their second, Simon Chamberlain converting a rebound after the Bankers keeper had made the initial save. Slazengers went looking for the equalizer, only for the final whistle to stop them in their tracks. Although it was a loss, Slazengers will look to the coming games confident that they can compete and will be looking for their first win of the season.

Slazengers mens first XI suffered a heavy defeat at home to a very strong Leeds university side on Saturday eventually going down 7-1. As with most university sides, Leeds were a young, fit team with a number of subs to utilise and Slazengers found it difficult to keep up to their pace and although Slaz did control some good periods of possession, they found themselves 4-0 down at the break. This seems to be the pattern of the season, a poor first half is followed by Slazengers picking their game up in the second.A number of chances were created throughout the second half with both teams going close, Leeds scoring first only for Jonny White to get on the score sheet for Slazengers. John Sykes went close for the home team following good work from Paul Wiper and anyone turning up to watch at this time would have been suprised at the scoreline. Leeds superior fitness began to tell and they scored a couple of late goals to make the scoreline more emphatic. Slazengers will hope that some of their injured players due back in the coming weeks will allow them to field a more consistent side in a season in which a relegation fight is surely coming.

First team need a victorySLAZENGER Mens first eleven continued their poor start to the season recording their 5th defeat in as many games away at fellow strugglers Brigg seconds. Slazengers travelled confident of taking the points despite missing a number of key players due to injury and holiday commitments. Ben Graham should have done better after good work from John Sykes, however as seems to be standard this season, Slazengers found themselves a man short soon after due to an injury to Jez Whawell.
A change of formation to compensate for the injury seemed to confuse Slazengers with a Brigg player able to convert after finding himself on the penalty spot without a defender within 5 yards. The second half was a bitty affair with neither side playing good hockey, Brigg managed to double their lead only for Slazengers to pull one back almost immediately, Paul Wiper with an excellent solo effort. However indiscipline began to creep in and after Wiper saw yellow after a rush of blood to the head, Brigg began to create more chances and grabbed a third shortly before the end. Matt Birkitt and man of the match Andy Fisher did well at centre back for Slazenger, neither in their regular position, and James Walker pulled off some excellent saves in goal.

Slazengers mens first team were looking to bounce back after a difficult start to the season against a Harrogate side who were also looking for their first win. It was however not to be for Slazengers after the injury curse which has left so many of their players out of action struck again. Captain Will Buckley and influencial playmaker Paul Wiper were both off injured inside the first 15 minutes, Wiper who took a blow on the ankle will hope to be back for next week, Buckley however with a broken hand will be out for somewhat longer.The game itself started well for Slazengers with John Sykes battling well to give Slazengers the lead however when Ben Graham also went off injured at half time, Slazengers were really up against it. Harrogate drew level after the break before Jez Whawell gave Slaz the lead once again only for Harrogate to draw level shortly after. With Slazengers looking to press on for victory despite their depleted numbers, Harrogate were able to break away and score a couple of late goals for a 4-2 victory. Although this was a loss, Slazengers performance will give them confidence for the coming weeks but with 4 of their most influencial players injured at the moment, they will be hoping for some quick recoveries in the week to come.

Slazengers mens first eleven visited a very strong Hull second team on Saturday which consisted of a number of former national league players with hopes of causing an upset but were outclassed and out muscled by the opposition. It seemed as though the Slazengers players minds were fixed on the huge funfair at the side of the pitch rather than the game and they found themselves 4-0 down after barely 20 minutes.A change of formation and some strong words seemed to give Slazengers a bit of a kick start and they held their own throughout the remainder of the first half and competed well in the second half only to concede late on to go down 5-0. Slazengers did create some chances, both Jack Kitchen and John Sykes came close and Ben Graham really should have done better when striking at goal from a narrow angle.
Slazengers will hope they have come up against two of the better sides in the league in their first two outings of the season, however whether this is the case will tell in the coming weeks.

The second half followed a similar pattern, Leeds holding a lot of possession but Slazengers defending well and looking to attack on the break, Ben Graham coming close after robbing a Leeds defender and driving into the circle, only for the Leeds keeper to make a good save. John Sykes came closer still with the Leeds keeper making another fine save. As is often the case though, Leeds grabbed a fortunate second goal with a hopefull ball into the circle taking a deflection and sneaking in through the narrowest of gaps at the near post. After Buckley left the field injured and with Slazengers pressing, Leeds grabbed a third towards the end to earn a flattering 3-0 win. Veteran Simon Chamberlain took man of the match awards for Slazengers and although this will appear a relatively comfortable win for Leeds, Slazengers will come away confident they can take points off Leeds in the league fixtures to come.

Slazengers mens first XI travelled to Driffield for their first league game of the campaign only to see the game descend into an almost farcical situation. Having travelled with only 11 players after a player had pulled out on Saturday morning, they soon found themselves down to 10 after Jonny White was injured in the first 5 minutes of the game. This was compounded by the fact that captain Will Buckley pulled a hamstring mid way through the first half leaving Slaz with only 9 fit players. This told throughout the half and although Slaz battled well, they found themselves 3-0 down at the break although 2 of these goals could easily have been avoided as they were results of defensive errors.The second half began with Slazengers attempting to find some pride and soon pulled one back with Ben Graham converting Phil Midgleys excellent ball. Driffield soon added another only for Paul Wiper to convert a short corner to give Slazengers a bit of hope. This was short lived however after Wiper was sent off following a difference of opinion with the umpire. Almost laughably, Slazengers lost their third player to injury, John Sykes catching a fierce shot on the elbow and with Wiper left on the sidelines to the end of the game, Slazengers found themselves down to just 6 fit outfield players with the best part of 20 minutes left to play. The lack of numbers told and Driffield ran in a further 4 goals to end up 8-2 winners although without
the efforts of man of the match James Walker in goal, this could have been a lot worse.
With no league game next week, Slazengers will hope that Sundays cup game against Leeds will give them chance to rest some of their injured players with a hope to getting back to full strength the following week.

Slazengers mens first team completed their pre-season program with a hard fought but well deserved 5-4 victory away at Sheffield Hallam IV. Going into the game with a weakened team, Slazengers could have feared a big defeat, especially after going 2-0 down relatively early on but this seemed to inspire them to play their best hockey of the season so far.As the first half progressed, Slazengers controlled the possession well and began to create chances although seemed to be lacking the final touch in front of goal. It wasn't until John Sykes got the final touch of a goal mouth scramble to take the score to 2-1 at half time that Slazengers began to believe in themselves. The second half began as the first had ended with chances being created, Paul Wiper eventually converting a short corner to tie the scores. Hallem then began to create opportunities themselves and scored two quick goals, both of which Slazengers will feel they could have prevented. Again though, this only spurred Slazengers into action, Sykes grabbed his second from the top of the 'D' after good work by Rob Stevens before Wiper once again tied the scores with a thunderous drive following a mazy run from Slazengers captain Will Buckley.
By now Slazengers sensed victory and continued to press and it fell to centre back Phil Midgley to seal the win after he deflected a shot into the roof of the net. Quite what he was doing so far up the pitch remains in question but Slazengers wont be complaining. Alex Mann deservedly took the man of the match award after a tireless performance in midfield. Slazengers begin their league campaign at Driffield and will be looking to build on what was a solid performance and good victory.

Slazengers mens first eleven continued their preperations for the new season with a tough game against a strong Chapletown team, eventually going down 2-1 although things could have been very different for Slazengers.The first half started with Slazengers taking the initiative, controlling the possession well and creating chances. The Chapletown keeper was called into action making a good save from a Ben Graham snapshot, and keeping out a number of short corners. The pressure eventually told however with Jack Kitchen converting at the back post after the keeper had been left stranded.
As the half went on Chapletown began creating chances of their own with James Walker making a fine save, deflecting the shot onto the crossbar only to be beaten shortly afterwards, again making the initial save but the
defence were unable to clear and Chapeltown converted the loose ball.
The second half became a bit scrappy and with the sun beating down, Slazengers became visibly tired and resorted to long balls, failing to play the passing game that had seen them controlling the game for the majority of the first half. John Sykes did well upfront for Slazengers but with little support most of the time, found it difficult to break the Chapletown defence down. Slazengers continued to battle and it was only a breakaway goal with the defence outnumbered that saw Chapletown score the winner.
Both teams will feel they could have done better but in what will be a re-building season, Slazengers will be looking to build on the excellent possession hockey they played in parts of the game.

After a difficult season last year which saw Slazengers mens hockey first string lose 8 of their starting 11 resulting in the inevitable relegation, they were looking to start the new season with a fresh confidence. The first friendly of the year was against higher league opposition in the form of LA Carnegie 2 and could quite easily have ended in a demoralising defeat after Slazengers found themselves 3-0 down after barely 10 minutes had passed. A change of formation however and a team spirit built during difficult times last season spurred Slazengers into action and midfield anchor Jonny White slowly began to take control, spreading the ball well and ensuring Slazengers kept some good possession. Some strong runs from Paul Wiper led to a number of short corner and when he was upended in the 'D', a penalty stroke was awarded. Veteran Simon Chamberlain stepped forward to convert the flick ensuring Slazengers went into the break 3-1 down.The second half was more of an end to end affair with chances going to both sides, LA Carnegie scored first to increase their lead but were again pegged back after a second penalty stroke was awarded. This time Paul Wiper stepped forward to convert the chance. Slazengers continued to press but a late breakaway by LA Carnegie to take the score to 5-2 resulted in a final score that didn't fully reflect the game.
Jack Mumford had an excellent debut game in goal as did Jack Kitchen, manipulising the ball well down the left of midfield. Although the final result was a defeat, Slazengers will take a lot of positives from the game and will look to build on them in the coming weeks.

Slazenger men’s I, returned to winning ways with a well deserved 7-4 victory away at Harrogate in a game that was a mix between great hockey and heavy challenges.
As usual, Slazengers found themselves a goal down early on but refused to let their heads go down and fired back quickly through Richard Hutchins with James Swinden giving them the lead shortly afterwards. Harrogate hit back but Hutchins' second ensured Slazengers had the lead at the break.
The second half saw Slazengers reduced to 10 men on two occasions, the first saw Matt Birkett receive a harsh yellow for nothing more than an attempted challenge, the second Yellow was Jonny White with what can only be described as a blatant body check. Slazengers fought back well though and scored whilst short handed on both occasions.
James Swinden with his second, an excellent individual effort and Rich Whawell converting a well worked short corner routine. Harrogate fought well throughout and managed to pull a couple back but a Mark Swinden’s penalty flick and Rich Hutchins' third made the game safe.
James Swinden took the man of the match award with Mark Swinden close by with some excellent distribution from his own defensive line.

Slazenger’s Men’s 1st’s failed to capitalise on a strong performance the previous week and went down 4 - 3 to Richmond Men’s 1st XI, and only have themselves to blame.
The game was littered with indiscipline throughout and the Slazenger’s player’s inability to control their emotions inevitably led to the loss. Richmond took the lead through a penalty stroke only for Slazenger’s to show the sort of game they are capable of to hit back with 2 quick goals, Mark Swindon converting a penalty stroke and Rich Hutchins finishing well after a flowing move.
The indiscipline began to surface though with Slazenger’s players beginning to concentrate more on the umpires decisions rather than their own game and went in at the half 3-2 down. The second half began much as the first had ended; Slazenger’s failing to make any impact on the game and Richmond happy to sit back with no real threat being posed. Slazenger’s were reduced to ten men when Ivan Wood saw yellow and were lucky not to be reduced further, a number of players were walking a very thin line by the end of the game.
Richmond added a fourth half way through the half and with Rich Hutchins grabbing his second towards the end, a neat individual goal which showed the talent which Slazenger’s posses. Slazengers Mens I kicked off their North Hockey league Division 2 EAST campaign with a well deserved 8-2 victory away at Durham City Mens I.The first half was a tight fought affair with both teams having chances before Richard Hutchin's shot rebounded off the post for it to find Ben Graham ready to tap in.
The second half was much more open with Slazengers playing good hockey in all areas of the pitch creating a number of chances. Richard Hutchins grabbed a couple either side of a Durham goal and Mark Swinden converted a penalty stroke to make it 4-1. Ben Graham's second came at the end of a flowing team move which went the full length of the pitch and Hutchins completed his hat-trick shortly after.
It wasn't all plain sailing though as Slazengers found themselves down to nine men for a period, Jonny White received a yellow for a particularly bad challenge and Paul Wiper also saw yellow for something slightly less conspicuous.
Durham pulled one back but Slazengers still continued to dominate, Graham completed his hat trick and was denied a fourth after the Durham goalkeeper threw his stick and gloves across the goal to prevent the easiest of tap ins. A move that saw him receive a yellow card, Mark Swinden converted the resulting penalty flick for his second of the game.
Ben Graham took the man of the match award with Chris Wood and Jimmy Swinden being involved in most of the build up play throughout the game.

Slazenger cross after St George's set-backSLAZENGER Mens 1sts team suffered a disappointing 7-2 defeat away at Northumbria St George's - although the scoreline doesn't tell the whole story. The hosts started brightly and Slazengers quickly found themselves two goals down before they found their feet and started creating some chances of their own.
But as the visitors pushed towards the Northumbria goal the hosts broke away and netted a third just before the break. The second-half began in the same vein with Slazengers pressing in search of a breakthrough only for Northumbria to attack on the break and net a fourth.
Slazengers persistence eventually paid off as they found a way back in to the game with two goals in quick succession through Andrew Birkett and Mark Butel. The visitors pushed forward for further goals but an injury to Matt Birkett left Slazengers with only ten fit players and allowed the hosts to break on the counter-attack and net three late goals.
Slazengers travel to undefeated Sheffield Hallam on Saturday.

Slazenger men’s first team suffered a tough 7 - 2 defeat away at the hands of Northumbria St Georges although the score line doesn't tell the whole story. Northumbria started brightly and by the time Slazenger had found their feet, they were already two goals down although heads didn't drop and Slazenger began to play some decent hockey, creating chances themselves. As the end of the first half approached, Slazenger were pressing to find a breakthrough only for Northumbria to break away and take a three goal lead at the half. The second half began positively for Slazenger with some good possession only to once again see an attack break down and Northumbria break away to score. Slazenger still continued to press and the inevitable goal came through Andrew Birkett, with a second coming in quick succession through Mark Butel. Chances continued to come with Birkett and Butel both going close again before an unfortunate injury to Matt Birkett left Slazenger with only ten fit players. As the end of the game neared and Slazenger pressed, the inevitable breakaways came and Northumbria were able to run in three late goals. Although it will be viewed as a heavy defeat, many positives came from a game in which a weakened Slazenger team played some very good hockey and created numerous chances. Slazenger travel to the undefeated Sheffield Hallam on Saturday, 11th November, looking to build on the positives taken from this game.

Slazenger men’s first team came into the game with Lincoln firsts looking to bounce back from a heavy defeat the previous week. Slazenger started brightly, playing fast flowing hockey from the off, creating early chances and taking a deserved lead with Ben Graham finishing neatly after good work from Neil Hutchins. However, the early pace soon began to take it's toll and with a depleted squad of only eleven, Lincolns ability to introduce fresh legs allowed them to take control with Slazenger finding themselves 2-1 down at the half. The second half began with Lincoln doubling their lead, although Slazenger immediately hit back through Scott Croucher. And when James Swinden pounced on a defensive error to set Mark Butel up for an easy finish, Slazenger began to press for the victory. Lincoln didn't lose heart however and were beginning to press themselves and when a yellow card reduced Slazenger to ten men, they began to create pressure and soon converted a short corner. Slazenger could have been forgiven for letting their heads go down but they continued to battle, something which has been lacking in previous weeks. And it was left to Mark Butel to convert a short corner to earn Slazenger a much deserved draw. Ben Graham took the “man of the match” honours with Mark Butel not far behind. A special mention must be made of young Maddie Swinden who has finally made a much anticipated, all be it a little messy, debut.Report by B Graham

Slazenger’s seconds took a hard fought point off an experienced Doncaster side but will be disappointed not to take all three.The Horbury side started brightly and used their pace to attack Doncaster down both flanks creating a number of chances only to be thwarted by the visiting keeper. As the half went on, Doncaster began to play the physical game that was expected of them, continually breaking Slazenger’s attacks down by any means necessary. It was just before the break however when the breakthrough came, Ed Richardson converting a neat short corner flick for Slazenger’s to go in at the break a goal up.
The second half started with much of the same, Doncaster trying to bully the game with Slazenger’s relying on playing fluent hockey. It was midway through the half when Doncaster drew level, however, after sneaking in at the back post. Slazenger’s continued to fight well with the package of Croucher, Amesbury and Webster linking well and when the ball finally fell to Richardson with the goal at his mercy, his slow motion flick was cleared off the line by the Doncaster defence.
Slazenger’s will still be looking for another couple of victories to ensure survival but this point will certainly come in handy come the end of the season.

Slazenger’s seconds followed on from their great result last week with another solid victory against highly placed Ben Rhydding thirds.
Slazenger's have a new found confidence and this showed straight from the off, the whole team linking up well to create a number of chances with Neil Croucher at the centre of much of the play. The pressure paid off mid way through the half with Tim Carr getting a subtle touch past the keeper to give Slazenger's the lead.
After a half time reshuffle, Slazenger's began the second half with more shape and persistently caused the Ben Rhydding defence problems. Tim Carr grabbed his second goal with another good finish. The Slazenger's keeper was a spectator throughout thanks to the solid duo of Eddie Taylor and Murray Amesbury at the back. And after James Walker had made it three after some surprisingly unselfish play by Croucher, Tim Carr sealed a great win by completing his hat-trick.
Slazenger’s will look to continue their run of good form away at high flying Sheffield University Bankers fourths on Saturday.

Slazenger’s seconds produced the performance of the season to beat previously undefeated and runaway leaders Sheffield Hallam thirds by 6 goals to 2.Slazenger’s were boosted by the return of a number of players and this showed early on, with the home side getting straight into the groove, Rich Hutchins giving Slazenger’s an early lead with a great finish. A well-worked short corner doubled the lead with Ed Richardson finishing well with only 15 minutes on the clock. This spurred Hallam into action and they began to press themselves, only for Slazenger’s to hit on the counter attack.
Ed Richardson grabbing his second with a neat finish into the bottom corner to go in at the half way stage three nil to the good.
The second half began much as the first had, Slazenger’s pressing with Hutchins grabbing his second early on in the half. A team with the quality of Hallam, however, was never going to lie down and they hit back with two goals for themselves. Neil Croucher then re-affirmed Slazenger’s dominance with a neat finish to some good work through the midfield. His over exuberant celebration, however, saw him on the sidelines for ten minutes. But Slazenger’s raised their work rate to keep the ball and press Hallam at every opportunity. The game closed with Ed Richardson completing his hat trick after another well worked short corner routine.
This was a fantastic performance from Slazenger’s and will surely give a huge boost to their bid to avoid relegation.

Slazenger’s seconds suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of LA Metrosthirds in a game where the four nil score line was not a true reflection
of the game. Slazenger’s were equal to their opposition in all respects,
creating more chances and having plenty of possession but were just unable
to make the final breakthrough.
Slazenger’s started well and nearly took the lead in the first ten minutes, with
Ben Graham deflecting a Ben Garside through ball onto the post. Richard Hutchins also came close, forcing the Metros keeper to make a number of strong saves. Metros took the lead against the run of play however through a penalty flick, home keeper Lee Secker almost keeping the ball out only for it to drop just over the goal line.
Slazenger’s continued to play good possession hockey but went in at half time a goal down.
The second half was much the same as the first, Slazenger’s playing good hockey
and creating chances only to fail to find the final breakthrough. Metros
eventually scored a disputed second goal, and after Richard Hutchins’ indiscipline, which got him sent off, Metro's scored two late goals to complete a scoreline, which Slazenger’s didn't deserve. Tim Carr took the man of the match award and Neil Hutchins was strong in the centre of defence.
Slazenger’s have a tough few weeks ahead having to play runaway leaders Sheffield Hallam, twice, with a huge relegation crunch match against Halifax sandwiched in between. These games coming when a number of regular players are unavailable.

Slazenger’s seconds traveled to Sheffield Uni Bankers looking for a much improved performance and that is exactly what they got. A new coaching team coupled with a huge team effort saw Slazenger’s walk away with a four nil victory against a team who had beaten them by five goals earlier in the season.Slazenger’s began the game in confident mood and were immediately on the pace, creating an early one on one chance only for the home keeper to make a good save. Slazenger’s continued to press and showed real composure on the ball, something which had been lacking so far this season. They managed to take the lead midway through the first half, Rich Hutchins finishing well after some great build up play. A minute later, Slazenger’s found the net again, Ben Graham with a smart finish to beat the home keeper for a two nil lead which they kept until the half time break.
As has happened so many times this season, Slazenger’s started the second half sluggishly with Bankers having some continued pressure. The Slazenger keeper, Tom Penistone, made a string of fine saves to keep the home side out, notably from a Buckley lob.
Slazenger’s realised they had to raise their game and began to produce hockey that has so far this season been lacking. Richard Hutchins grabbing his second from a
well worked short corner, with Ben Graham completing his double from another short corner strike for a four nil victory. Garside, Birkett and White all worked well but it was keeper Penistone who took the man of the match spoils, followed closely by Graham.
Slazenger will take great confidence from what was by far their best performance of the season and will look to take this form into next weeks game at home to LA Metro.

Slazenger’s seconds suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Airdale I, a result which leaves them in a precarious position at the bottom of the table. The game started well with Slazenger’s dominating early on and creating a number of chances, with Rich Hutchins giving Slazenger’s the lead midway through the half with a great top corner strike.Slazenger’s continued to play well but failed to convert any more chances. However they still went in at the end of the first half, one nil up. As has happened so many times this year, though, Slazenger let the lead slip. Airdale drawing level with a well worked short corner routine and then taking the lead midway through the second half.
Slazenger’s continued to press but lacked shape and struggled to make a breakthrough. Airdale eventually wrapping the game up with a break away goal late on.
Slazenger’s have now lost after being ahead at half time on five occasions this season, something that they need to work on if they are to avoid relegation.

Slazenger’s seconds suffered another disappointing defeat at the hands of Brigg seconds in a game that they should have so easily won.The game started at a good pace with Slazenger’s making some strong in roads into the Brigg defence and justifiably took the lead through Tim Carr. They then doubled the lead midway through the first half, with Richard Hutchins executing a great reverse stick finish after some good build up play. Brigg pulled one back before Slazenger’s took a 3-1 lead, Carr grabbing his second with a subtle finish, which surprised even himself.
The second half was a different story however with Brigg dominating from the off. They had a 15-minute spell in which they created chance after chance with the conclusion being Slazenger’s found themselves 4-3 down midway through the second half.
They did however manage to raise their game and draw level, Hutchins grabbing his second from the penalty spot. The game was there for the taking in the final ten
minutes but it was Brigg who snatched it with a penalty flick in the final minutes.
Ben Graham took “the man of the match” honours for Slazenger and Mathew Birkett used his head well throughout the game. Slazenger’s will look to the Christmas break to try and solve their problems in closing out games, something which they will have to do if they are to break clear of the relegation positions.

Clean sheet for Slazenger’s 5th'sA good win for Slazenger even though it should have been 7 - 0 as Richard Hutchings was robbed of his second goal.
Slazenger started off well pushing up the field to the goal. A good link up from Richard and Jermane Cockerill saw Cockerill put 1 goal away. Airedale came back, but Slazenger’s strong defence kept them out. Excellent teamwork between midfield Hutchins and Cockerill kept the team going and spirits high, with a half time score of 4-0 to Slazenger.
Slazenger came out strong in the second half with goalie Lee Secker making some excellent saves to keep a clean sheet for Slazenger.
The final score was 6-0, with the goal scorers being, 2 from Cockerill, 1 each from Hutchins, Veteran Dave Smyth, young Chris Wood and the final from Andy Auty.
All in all, this was one very good match to watch with end-to-end play and good input from all 11 players on the field.

Slazenger’s seconds came into this game in confident mood after some good results in previous weeks but were soundly beaten by a very strong student team.Slazenger’s were 3-0 down inside the first eight minutes and were eventually beaten 6-1 although the score line didn't reflect the effort put in by the Slazenger’s players.
The only high note of the game was a fantastic top corner drag flick by Rich Hutchins early in the second half. The visiting keeper was forced to make some great saves, notably from a Ben Graham strike with Tim Carr also posing a threat. Paul Johnson took the man of the match award for Slazenger’s, mainly due to his great form early on.
Slazenger’s take on Airdale next week in what could prove to be a crunch match with both teams currently languishing in the relegation positions.

Slazenger’s third team entered this quarter final clash against Huddersfield, with confidence, after a resounding victory in the previous round, a confidence that was well founded and resulted in Slazenger’s coming away 4-0 victors.The game began with both sides playing some strong hockey but it was Slazenger’s who opened the scoring through a Richard Hutchins penalty flick after the Huddersfield keeper had illegally shielded the ball. Although many more chances were created, this was the only goal of the first half.
The second half was all Slazenger’s with James Walker creating chance after chance with some great play down the right. Ben Graham eventually grabbing the second goal with a solid strike from distance.
Slazenger’s continued to dominate with Carr adding a third and Walker grabbing the goal that his performance deserved.
This was a great display and will give Slazenger great confidence going into the semi finals of a cup competition they surely have a great chance of winning.

Slazenger’s seconds finally grabbed their elusive first win of the season with a well deserved 3-1 win away at LA Metros thirds, a result which will hopefully kick start their season.The game started very well for Slazenger’s, who found themselves a goal up inside the first two minutes, Tim Carr with the finishing touch after some good build up play through the midfield. From then on, the game was not pretty with both sides not playing to the standard they would expect to. But it was LA Metros who pulled level, although Slazenger’s will feel it was against the run of play. A strong break from the back by Neil Hutchins allowed brother Rich Hutchins to net, after a neat interchange with Tim Carr, for Slazenger’s to go in at the break a goal to the good.
The second half was as scrappy as the first but it was Slazenger’s who stamped their authority on the game, Carr grabbing his second for a well deserved victory.
It wasn’t the prettiest game of hockey but Slazenger’s seconds will take heart from a battling performance, something that they have lacked in previous weeks.

Slazenger were unable to maintain their recent winning form in the North League Division 2 East with this disappointing defeat at Norton.Uncharacteristically, Slazenger allowed the home side to dominate the pattern of play in the first half as they struggled to get their own passing game going. It was no surprise then when the side from the North East took the lead being quickest to react to a rebound from a penalty corner.
Slazenger briefly rallied and James Swinden finished off a fine individual run with a slow looping shot from the edge of the circle, which somehow managed to bypass the goalkeeper and two defenders. However, this was a brief respite for the Horbury side that soon found themselves behind once again as Norton profited from a scramble in the circle.
Slazenger pushed further forward in the second half but too many individuals failed to produce the high standards they set earlier in the season. Only the experienced Ivan Wood rose about this mediocrity as he made a series of crucial interceptions to keep Norton at bay. However, even he was powerless to prevent Norton from adding a third from a well-worked penalty corner routine. Slazenger showed an increased sense of urgency after this and did hit back when Mike Shaw applied the finish to one of their few decent passing moves. Slazenger piled on the pressure in the last 5 minutes but were unable to find an equaliser.
Despite this loss, Slazenger remain second in the league as their rivals also faltered. They aim to get their season back on track with a home game against Stockton on Saturday. They are also in action in the HA Trophy on Sunday away at LA Metros commencing 2.00pm.

Report: Mens 3rd XI (7) vs (1) Wakefield 3rd's

Slazenger’s thirds hosted local rivals Wakefield thirds on Sunday in the third team cup and produced a fantastic performance to run out 7-1 winners.Both teams were always going to be up for the game but it was Slazenger’s who struck first blood, Johnny Halliday striking a fierce short corner home. The game settled into a physical well-fought game, both teams playing good hockey but once again Slazenger’s were able to strike with Timmy Carr finishing another short corner just before half time.
The second half began as the first had ended, Carr sniffing out another close in finish to give Slazenger’s a three goal cushion, Wakefield pulled one back before Carr completed his hat trick with a great strike, beating three defenders before drilling the ball home.
By this time Slazenger’s were in total control, playing great hockey completely dominating all areas of the pitch, Robin Whawell netting before Rich Hutchins rounded off a great short corner routine with a simple tap in. Marcus Shufflebooty made a great save from a penalty flick and Halliday completed the scoring with another good first time strike, surprising all by managing to stay on his feet long enough to get to the ball. Eddie Taylor used all his weight to boss the defence with James Walker always causing problems for the Wakefield defence. Slazenger’s now look forward to the draw with anticipation.

Report: Mens 2nd's (1) vs (2) Halifax 2nd's

Once again, Slazenger’s seconds were left disappointed after a poor performance going down 2-1 away to Halifax seconds. A result that leaves them rooted firmly to the bottom of the table. The story of the season continued with Slazenger’s playing some great hockey but then letting themselves down with individual errors and a lack of ability to dig deep when needed.The game started with Slazenger’s playing some good hockey but found themselves caught out midway through the first half going a goal down. Then, Slazenger’s began to pick up their play, Ted Richardson equalising with a great reverse stick strike.
The second half was much the same with Slazenger’s playing good stuff only to let themselves down in the final third of the game with Halifax grabbing a late winner from a well worked short corner routine. Slazenger’s will have to dig deep in the coming games to reverse what has been a poor start to the season for them.

Report: Mens 1st's (6) vs (1) Marton Furness 1st's

Slazenger moved into second place in North Hockey League Division 2 East after this crushing defeat of lowly Marton Furness. Slazenger’s hero was Mike Thornicroft who grabbed a well-deserved second-half hat-trick.It would be easy to say this was a game of two halves as the score line was goalless at half-time. However, this does not tell the true story. Slazenger had almost total dominance of possession in the first period but found it difficult to break through some stubborn and aggressive defending. At the other end, Ivan Wood was in supreme form marshalling the home side’s defence with cool authority.
Once Thornicroft grabbed his first at the start of the second half with a well taken flick at a penalty corner. The floodgates then opened. The home side blitzed the Marton defence and scored a further four goals inside 15 minutes with one penalty stroke in reply. Swift attacks followed one another and ended with cool finishes from the ever-willing Chris Hayton and a second for Thornicroft. James Swinden chipped in with a thunderous strike from a penalty corner and Thornicroft completed his hat-trick soon after good work down the right from Paul Wiper.
The side from Middlesbrough grew increasingly desperate and lost all discipline, having two players sin-binned for crude challenges. With Mark Swinden and Johnny White anchoring midfield and Simon Chamberlain raiding down the right, Slazenger grabbed a deserved final goal from Mike Shaw following another good passing movement. The Horbury side were unlucky not be awarded a penalty stroke in the final minutes as Adrian Buckley was up-ended in the circle.
Slazenger look to consolidate their position near the top of the table away at Norton on Saturday at 1.30pm.

Slazengers finished the first half Two One up. With a smashing ball in the back of the net by Ian Gordon, followed shortly by a cracking goal by Andy Auty, which left their Goal keeper stunned. Slazengers came out a bit too confident in the second half and soon found them selves at two all after Kingston came back with two easy balls tapped into the net. Slazengers soon bucked their ideas up and were full on and attacking in style and with some great defending by Andy Fisher.Andy Auty came through to score his second of the match to make the score 3 all. Jermane Cockerill scored the final and winning goal in the last minutes of the game with a fine cross from right wing.
It was nice to see two teams that were trying to bring young blood into the club game.

York 2nds - 2 Slazenger 1st - 6
Previous encounters between these two teams have always been close, but this time Slazenger ran out easy winners.
It was not clear what was to come later as previously unbeaten York applied early pressure in this North Division 2 East fixture. However, a combination of tight marking and some excellent saves from James Cowden kept the home side at bay. There were also early signs that the Horbury side were capable of catching York on the break. They took the lead from one such attack. James Swinden sprinted down the right and his pinpoint cross was met by Paul Wiper who expertly finished with a first-time shot. Slazenger soon doubled their advantage. This time James Swinden required no assistance as he finished off his own mazy dribble. Slazenger were now in complete control and it was no surprise that they added a third with a beautifully worked passing movement from back to front resulting in a goal for the impressive Mark Swinden.
There was no complacency from Slazenger at the start of the second half as they added a fourth when a crisp shot from James Swinden beat the hapless York keeper. However, the home side rallied, taking advantage of poor marking to score two open play goals in quick succession. There was then a key 10-minute period during which Slazenger defenders Ivan Wood and Will Buckley steadied the ship. York’s resolve was finally broken as Adrian Buckley cooly applied a finish after a goalmouth scramble. Finally, Mike Thornicroft got his reward for his hard work up front, converting a penalty stroke after he had been unceremoniously upended in the circle.
Slazenger look to retain their winning momentum in a home fixture against Marten Furness at 1.30 pm on Saturday.

The story of Slazenger’s seconds season continued as they once again failed to capitalise on some good hockey to go down one nil at home to Brigg seconds. The game started well for Slazengers creating early chances, which saw them have a goal disallowed, and a fierce strike by Andy Foreman cleared off the line by the Brigg defence. The second half started and as so often has happened this season, Slazengers found themselves conceding an early goal. This meant Slazengers had to chase the game and despite some great penetration roundthe back by Ben Garside, the failure to find the final ball was beginning to frustrate the home side. The lack of a natural centre forward told as chances went begging with the home side left ruing what could have been a
comfortable victory. Slazengers find themselves in the relegation zone after only four games and will have to find some form in front of goal if they are to make any sort of impression this term.

Slazenger’s seconds poor start to the season continued after they suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat away to Ben Rhydding III in a game that they could have so easily won.
The game started with Slazenger’s playing some great hockey, making it their best half of hockey so far this season, to go in at the break a goal to the good. Dan Cooper latching onto a misdirected Tim Carr strike to give Slazenger’s a well deserved lead. Slazenger’s could have gone into the break two or three goals better off after some fantastic all round team play but some great goal keeping kept them at bay.
The second half was a different story however, with Ben Rhydding attacking in numbers, which saw them pull level and then take the lead midway through the second half. Slazenger’s rallied and began to control the play again but the loss of Ben Garside through his second yellow card in three games really put pay to the fight back, Ben Rhydding using their numerical advantage to kill the game off with a third.
Slazenger’s can take heart from a great first half performance but will have to learn to play for the full 70 minutes if they are to make an impression in what could turn out to be a tough league.

Slazenger seconds produced a much improved performance to take a point off a strong Bankers side and can consider themselves unlucky not to take all three. The game started with bankers in the supremacy creating a number of chances, with keeper Lee Secker keeping slaz in it.Slaz soon found their feet though and started to create chances of their own, Andy Foreman going close on a couple of occasions. And it was the slaz pressure that paid off, Rich Hutchins turning in a Ben Garside through ball to go in at the break a goal to the good. Bankers started the second half as they did the first, drawing level and then taking a lead somewhat against the run of play.
Slaz soon began to dominate though, Garside running the midfield and Hutchins dominating throughout the field of play. Slaz created a number of chances, drawing level through a subtle Foreman flick and they were unlucky not to grab all three points. This was a strong performance from Slaz seconds, one which they will look to build on next week.

Slazenger thirds took another giant stride up the Yorkshire League Division 6 with a narrow 2-1 victory away at local rivals Huddersfield thirds.The visitors opened well, passing the ball fluentlly and creating chances from the start. robert Stephens led the
forward line well, but it was Jonathan Clewlow who opened the scoring for Slazenger, beating the goalie at the top of the D after being put through by playmaker Simon Miller.
Slazenger;s rearguard of Mickey turner, Ian Wier, and keeper Jonathon Walker were in formidable form, restricting the Huddersfield front line to limited chances.In the second half, a quickly taken 16 yard hit started the move that swept the full length of the pitch and led to Slazenger's second goal.
James Walker's fine run set up Clewlow for his second goal of the day. Huddersfield pulled a goal back late on but the visitor's defence helf firm for the win.

Slazenger Seconds were in commanding form in their Yorkshire League Division 4 encounter with Hull thirds and the three points from their 3-1 win lifted them further up the table.Alec Gilston opened the scoring for Slazenger and Ben Graham added a second before half time. The midfield of Graham, Ashley Smith and Johnny White was dominant, running the game and putting lots of pressure on their East Coast counterparts.
When Hull did threaten, Bob Wood was in commanding form as sweeper, frustrating Hull's attacks and leading the Slazenger counter-attacks. An unsavoury incident in the second half resulted in the dismissal of Hull's centre-half and a yellow card for the Slazenger goalkeeper. Lawrence Thornton donned the pads and helmet and was immediately called to make a save from a short corner. Ben Graham scored his second to put Slazenger 3-0 up and Hull grabbed a consolation with the last hit of the match.
On Saturday, Slazenger seconds travel to Bradford, 1:15pm start.

DEPLETED Slazenger were ultimately beaten by a three-goal second-half blast from Stockton in division 2 of the Northern Counties League.The visitors started well and dominatd the game for the majority of the first half. But the home side scored just before the break and the goal shook Slazenger's confidence.
The second half was dissappointing for Slazenger who struggled to contain the host's swift, incisive breaks. Man of the match Simon Chamberlain was outstanding in the visiting defence but he was powerless to prevent the three second-half strikes that put paid to any thoughts slazenger had of a comeback.
Richard whawell scored Slazenger's consolation and there were also fine contributions from Mark Butel and Simon Kaye.
On Saturday, Slazenger entertain Newcastle University, 1:30pm start

Slazenger Veterans went out of the Yorkshire Veterans Cup, losing 3-1 at Adel in an entertaining encounter.The more youthful Adel side opened strongly and the visitors had to dig deep to stay in contention with Ashley Smith working in defence and George Hutchins in commanding form in goal. However Adel's short courner routine paid dividends and they raced into a two-goal lead.
But Slazenger responded well and pulled a goal back before the break when Keith Whittle created an opportunity for Ian Gordon to fire home. The second half was evenly contested with the visitors creating some good chances but they failed to close the gap and once Adel had scored again, the game was beyond Slazenger's side.

Slazenger Thirds raced into an early three goal lead at Adel Fourths but only just pipped their opponents 4-3. The visitory made the fatal mistake of 'taking their foot off the gas' and nearly lost the match.In the first half Slazenger completely bosssed the midfield, pinning Adel back in their own D for long periods. Goals came at regular intervals from Andy birkett, Jonothan Clewlow and Eddy Richardson but the proverbial 'game of two halfs' saw Adel hit back afterthe break scoring two goals and pulling themselves right back into the contest.
Slazenger broke away and scored what proved to be a crucial foal through man of the match Jonathoan Clewlow but then conceded a third Adel goal. The visitors had to endure an anxious final ten minutes and were indebted to cool defending from Eddie Taylor that secured them a valuable three points in their battle against relegation.
This Saturday Slazenger Thirds entertain Leeds University, 12pm

Slazenger Seconds continued their climb up the Yorkshire League division 4 table with a well-earned victory against table-topping Halifax Seconds.
In a scrappy first half, both sides cancelled each other out with spoiling tactics that prevented flowing hockey. Although Ben Graham scored for Slazenger the game still deadlocked at helf-time 1-1.
Slazenger came out after the break more focussed and determined on the job in hand, the whole side appeared to gel from the off. Alec Gilston, back on form, scored the two goals that ultimately sealed victory with the midfielders Andy Foreman, Jonny white and Ben Graham taking control of the game.
Skipper Matt Burkett kept the momentum going, but Halifax fought back to reduce the feficit to just one goal. Cool defending from Bob Wood and man of the match Thomas Penistone in goal saw Slazenger through to a deserved victory on the back of an excellent all-round team performance.

SLAZENGER's team alreadyt depleated by injury and illness had to play much of the match with just ten men folowing the dismissal of Windler and it proved too great a hurdle to overcome at Halifax.The match stated off at a fast pace with both teams creating chances.
Both Butel and windler went close for the visitors following some slick passing. But the harsh dismissal of Windler, compounded by a Halifax goal, left Slazenger with an uphill task.
The visitors held firm and in the second half, drew level when Butel found the back of the net to pull Slazenger right back in the game.
The game was now a struggle for the Wakefield-based side and despite some stubborn defending and fine goal keeping by Dave Hellam the pressure proved too much and Halifax edged into the lead.
This seemed to spur Slazenger on and they forced the hosts onto the back foot, searching for the equaliser.
whittle almost made it 2-2, but he put his shot over the bar and although the visitors continued to exert pressure on the home side they could not break them down.
This Saturday Slazenger entertain Sheffield Bankers in the North Eastern Division 2 1:30pm start.

Points shared after dramatic derbyAN EXCITING derby game witnessed visitors Wakefield come back from two goals down and score a last-gasp equaliser to share the spoils against an in-form Slazenger.
The North Hockey League division 2 east contest started brightly and it was the home side who made the early running. They took the lead through Kaye and looked comfortable with defenders Swallow and Shaw solid at the back.
The hosts doubled their lead after a fine solo effort from Mark Butel and came close to making it three but fine goalkeeping by Andy Loftus kept Wakefield in the game. Before half-time the visitors were given a lifeline after front man Gary Town laid a slip ball to Nick Bunney who made no mistake to make it 2-1.
At the start of the second period Slazenger re-established their grip on the game, giving themselves a two goal cushion with Butel s second of the game. They couldn t consolidate this for long as Wakefield showed great character and eventually hauled themselves level following a goal from Gary Town and the same player equalised with a penalty stroke.
The seesaw battle continued as the home side hit straight back and Kevin Windler s emphatic finish gave Slazenger what they thought was the winner. But, with just two minutes remaining, Wakefield s veteran defender Ivan Wood provided a timely strike to tie the game at 4-4. Unbelievably, this wasn t the final action as Slazenger were awarded a penalty with just 30 seconds left. Man of the match Whittle stepped up but his flick was guided wide to leave the game tied.
Slazenger currently lie fourth in the division and enjoy a Christmas break from competitive games but play a friendly against Bradford on Saturday.

SLAZENGER CELEBRATE HISTORIC DERBY TRIUMPH OVER WAKEFIELDHISTORY was made on Saturday when Wakefield and Slazenger met for the first time in league competition at first-team level.
And the record books will recount an away win for Slazenger and with it maximum North League Division 2 East points that took Slazenger above Wakefield in the league standings for the very first time in the Horbury club s history.
Wakefield set the early pace and bombarded the Slazenger defensive line. But Slazenger s man of the match David Kaye went on to dominate the midfield, however, and Dave Hellam had another outstanding game in goal for the visitors. Front men Kevin Windler and Mark Butel started to cause problems for the home defence up to half-time though their shooting was a little wayward at times Butel launching the ball into the car park on one occasion.
The half closed with the deadlock intact. Wakefield again had the better of the opening exchanges in the second half and the home side took the lead with a well-executed goal through Gary Town. This was the spark Slazenger needed, however, and with Wakefield losing influential skipper Paul Fox through injury the visitors now had the upper hand despite being a goal behind.
Windler scored a deserved equaliser and with Slazenger maintaining their pressure the visitors were able to force another penalty stroke off which Keith Whittle converted. The experienced Simon Chamberlain controlled matters in the remaining nine minutes or so to deny Wakefield a share of the spoils.
Wakefield travel to Halifax on Saturday while Slazenger entertain Leeds University, push back 1.30pm.
