SLAZENGER CELEBRATE HISTORIC DERBY TRIUMPH OVER WAKEFIELD

HISTORY was made on Saturday when Wakefield and Slazenger met for the first time in league competition at first-team level.

And the record books will recount an away win for Slazenger and with it maximum North League Division 2 East points that took Slazenger above Wakefield in the league standings for the very first time in the Horbury club s history.

Wakefield set the early pace and bombarded the Slazenger defensive line. But Slazenger s man of the match David Kaye went on to dominate the midfield, however, and Dave Hellam had another outstanding game in goal for the visitors. Front men Kevin Windler and Mark Butel started to cause problems for the home defence up to half-time though their shooting was a little wayward at times Butel launching the ball into the car park on one occasion.

The half closed with the deadlock intact. Wakefield again had the better of the opening exchanges in the second half and the home side took the lead with a well-executed goal through Gary Town. This was the spark Slazenger needed, however, and with Wakefield losing influential skipper Paul Fox through injury the visitors now had the upper hand despite being a goal behind.

Windler scored a deserved equaliser and with Slazenger maintaining their pressure the visitors were able to force another penalty stroke off which Keith Whittle converted. The experienced Simon Chamberlain controlled matters in the remaining nine minutes or so to deny Wakefield a share of the spoils.

Wakefield travel to Halifax on Saturday while Slazenger entertain Leeds University, push back 1.30pm.
